Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains a global health problem, with 2.1 million new infections globally in 20151 and 455 newly diagnosed cases in Singapore in the same year. It is increasingly evident that novel strategies are needed to achieve significant reductions in new HIV infections.
